captain john's fish company
running in stealth-mode, co-investigators kirstie and jim joined me for a high-speed bish 'n' batter lunch, once again down the waterfront. this time our target was deep in the heart of touristville: captain john's fish company in the harbourside market at historic properties. I think I may adopt a new policy whereby rating length is proportional to bish 'n' batter goodness. this is going to be a short one.things got off to a bad start with a 2pc costing $9.14 before pop and tax. while we waited for our food, I noticed a substantial number of $3 bags of dulse, or dried seaweed, in a glass display case and asked the server if I could try some. after spending 5 minutes asking every other employee in the shop if that was possible, she finally located the sampler bag and gave me a small piece with the warning that the bag had been open for a couple of weeks and thus it probably wouldn't taste very good. note to budding retailers: this is _not the way to sell your wares. for $3, you can afford to open a new bag and let people sample fresh product. while all of this was going on, we also had ample opportunity to view the racks upon racks of pre-cooked fish sitting in the back.
the food looked ok, but the fish was substantially over-battered, resulting in the dreaded uncookedbits. this was to make up for the fact that the fish itself was tiny, and hiding in the middle. the fries were of the ok-if-very-hot-but-soon-after-not-so-good frozen variety. the malt vinegar and lemon wedge did not make up for the offbrand ketchup and tartar sauce, the latter of which was far too sweet.
captain john's fish company is the tourist gack we managed to dodge with captains' catch. a pretentious name, overpriced product, unhelpful staff, and just generally a letdown. avoid.
