nail & kneecap pub style restaurant
I'd heard from a friend that the fish & chips at the nail & kneecap pub style restaurant looked good, and even came in two flavours: local favorite (battered) and english style (breaded). given this exciting choice and the convenient location on a drizzly friday afternoon, co-investigators smolyn, taryn, david and I checked it out. even the dauntingly wordy restaurant name didn't ring the necessary alarm bells it should have.none of us were daring enough to get a full order of the breaded, and our requests for a single piece of breaded were shot down. strike one for an uncooperative kitchen. there was no choice for number of fish, nor were coca cola branded products available. those who could partake in the pub style beverages did so with great relish.
the food looked promising on arrival, coming with little paper dishes of both malt vinegar and tartar sauce, a lemon wedge, and tasty looking coleslaw. the fish was plentiful, but the batter was seriously undercooked. the fries were soggy and dark brown - the sign of too much time in a cold dirty fryer. the tartar sauce ended up being more like mayo and less like tartar, although it served it's purpose. full disclosure: I'm writing this review three weeks after visiting, and I don't remember what the coleslaw was like. it looks tasty in the picture.
kirstie couldn't join us on this one due to a time constraint, and had asked for takeaway to evaluate. I couldn't in good conscience bring her back a bag of this stuff, especially since at $12 it is the most expensive place we've hit so far. sorry nail and kneecap pub style restaurant, you might be skirting the liquor laws and filling the appropriate spot for a pub on quinpool, but you're not a restaurant that's worthy of serving fish & chips.
